1- The Xoloitzcuintli: A Unique and Ancient Breed

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-etz-queent-lee), also known as the Mexican hairless, is a breed of dog that has a rich and ancient history dating back more than 3,500 years. They were highly valued by the ancient Aztecs, who believed they had connections with the spirit world and were used in religious rituals [1].

Despite their cultural significance, their numbers went into decline due to their association with paganism, and it wasn’t until the 20th century that efforts were made to preserve the breed.

Appearance and Characteristics

Most Xoloitzcuintlis are hairless, but some have a short and smooth coat. They have a sleek and elegant body with large ears, and their wrinkled forehead gives them a highly expressive face. They are medium-sized dogs, with a height of up to 23 inches and a weight of up to 50 pounds. They have a lifespan of 13-18 years and moderate exercise needs.

Temperament and Care

Xoloitzcuintlis are highly loyal and protective dogs that require a lot of mental and social stimulation. They are known to have high separation anxiety and require constant companionship. Additionally, their exposed skin makes them vulnerable to sunburn, so it’s important to protect them from the sun.
